British Columbia was the second largest power engineering market in Canada over the period we measured: 269 certification-naming postings in three months, behind Alberta's 480 and just ahead of Ontario's 255. It is also the most distinctive of the three, because BC's demand is concentrated at one end of the certification ladder.
Where these numbers come from. Full Steam Ahead runs a Canadian power engineering job board, and this article is built from what it indexed over the three months from 8 May to 8 August 2026: 1,351 postings across Canada that actually named a power engineering certification. Postings that mentioned no certificate class were excluded, so general maintenance and building-operator roles are not padding these counts. Two honest limits: this is what one board captured, not the whole market, and almost no Canadian employer publishes a wage in the posting itself, which is why the pay figures below come from Job Bank rather than from us.

Vancouver dominates, as you would expect from a market driven by institutional buildings. The number worth pausing on is Dawson Creek at 18 postings, more than Surrey, Victoria or Richmond. Dawson Creek and Fort St John together posted 25 roles in three months, which is the northeast gas sector showing up clearly in a province people think of as a Lower Mainland market.

Add up the health authorities — Northern Health, Vancouver Coastal, Island Health and Interior Health — and you get 37 postings from BC's public health system alone, before counting UBC's 14. Hospitals and health care was also the largest industry tag on BC postings at 14, ahead of oil and gas at nine.
The rest of the list maps neatly onto the province: forestry and wood products (West Fraser, LP Building Solutions) in the interior, food processing (Sofina Foods) in the Fraser Valley, hospitality (Fairmont) and commercial property (CBRE, GSL Group) in the cities, and gas (AltaGas) in the northeast.

BC is a 4th Class market. Four out of five BC postings named 4th Class, a far higher share than Alberta's six in ten. Only 12 postings in three months named 2nd Class, and five named 1st.
Read that carefully before drawing the wrong conclusion. It does not mean a 2nd Class ticket is worth less in BC. It means senior roles in this province turn over rarely and are often filled internally, so the ones that do reach a public posting attract attention. If your plan is to hold a 2nd Class certificate and stay in BC, expect to wait for the right opening rather than pick from a list.
What it pays
Job Bank's wage data for power engineers, last updated 19 November 2025 from Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey for 2023 to 2024, puts British Columbia at a median of $41.00/hour, with a low of $35.00 and a high of $66.87.
Two things stand out. BC has the highest wage floor in the country: its $35.00 low is above every other province, including Alberta's $31.00. But its median sits well below Alberta's $57.69 and below the national median of $49.23.
That combination is consistent with the certificate mix above. A market weighted toward 4th Class institutional work pays a solid entry rate and has a shorter ladder above it than a market weighted toward heavy industry. At 2,080 hours, BC's median is roughly $85,000 a year before overtime and premiums.
What this means if you are upgrading
- 4th Class is the working ticket in BC. It is what most postings ask for and what most institutional employers are staffed around.
- 3rd Class is the realistic next step, at 74 postings in three months. Beyond that the advertised market thins quickly.
- If you want the top of the ladder, watch the northeast and the interior. Gas processing and mills are where BC's heavy plant work is, and where the higher wage band in that Job Bank spread lives.
- Consider portability. Certification is interprovincial. A 2nd Class ticket earned in BC is worth more in the Alberta market than the BC posting volume suggests.
